Position Summary

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is seeking a talented professional with leadership experience in new media advocacy to oversee GLAAD’s digital media initiatives for proactively and creatively achieving full equality for gay and transgender people. This position will include developing, leading and evaluating GLAAD’s work in digital media, and providing strategic vision and operational direction and oversight for GLAAD’s online presence organization-wide. The Senior Director of Digital Media Advocacy reports to the Senior Vice-President of the organization, and serves as a member of the President’s leadership team.

Responsibilities

• Building and maintaining the LGBT community’s digital advocacy capacity through GLAAD-led new media initiatives that also build GLAAD’s online brand and increase support for, and involvement in, GLAAD’s mission for achieving full LGBT equality;



• Developing and marketing GLAAD’s website and blog, together with developing and maintaining relationships with online media outlets to expand GLAAD’s presence and reach with blogs, social media and other digital outlets;



• Developing, implementing and managing initiatives to support GLAAD-led and/or GLAAD-enabled new media advocacy in order to advance GLAAD’s goal of LGBT full equality, including:



o Building upon GLAAD’s current efforts to reach and activate LGBT community members and allies to promote LGBT full equality and oppose defamation through new media advocacy;



o As part of GLAAD’s overall media advocacy and anti-defamation work, developing and implementing GLAAD-led advocacy campaigns and education efforts on digital media platforms, as well as community-led efforts on GLAAD platforms;



o In the rapidly evolving world of new media, diagnosing and analyzing the comparative effectiveness of emerging new media platforms, tools and practices, together with planning the integration of these emergent capacities into GLAAD’s new media program;



o Developing and maintaining “media kits” to empower LGBT community members to influence and create digital media that fairly and accurately represents their experiences, and developing methods for distributing kits, tracking their use and revising content consistent with evaluations and feedback.



• Under the direction of GLAAD’s CIO, adopting, integrating and implementing technologies for digital programs including hosted solutions, extranet, database and social media.



• With GLAAD’s Senior Director of Programs, developing and managing GLAAD’s digital platforms, tools and overall capacity to support new media advocacy efforts of statewide and local LGBT organizations;



• With GLAAD’s Senior Director of Development, developing and implementing comprehensive online membership growth and fundraising campaigns;



• With GLAAD President, Board of Directors and senior staff, developing and maintaining best practices for the organization’s use of digital media, together with supporting the strengthening of competency of staff around digital and online media, and consulting with other GLAAD staff and departments on this topic, offering support and suggestions for improvement;



• Working with program and communications staff to implement a GLAAD brand strategy and messaging program for this area, to ensure the visibility and success of GLAAD’s work within digital and online media platforms;



• Planning, writing, editing, and proofing materials, including releases, alerts, and media analyses and critiques in a fast paced environment to respond quickly to the online and digital media world;



• Traveling as needed to represent organization at events, trainings and meetings, and to meet with activists, journalists and bloggers promoting awareness and visibility of GLAAD’s work;



• Ensuring coordination with other senior leadership team members whose staff members provide information, resources and support for digital initiatives; and



• The work of GLAAD resembles a campaign-style work environment; there is always a high level of energy, excitement and activity for everyone in the organization; preparing for the next events/activities to accomplish our important media advocacy work, fighting the defamation against the LGBT community and changing hearts and minds about our need for full equality. Staff members are expected to consciously and continuously promote the mission, values, programs, and impact of the organization when presented with opportunities for participating in membership development and reaching out to personal connections on behalf of GLAAD.

Qualifications

• Required: 8+ years experience working with digital and online media, preferably within an advocacy setting

• Required: Bachelor’s Degree and/or equivalent amount of work related experience

• Required: Senior-level management experience and a record of visible success in planning for, executing and managing successful digital media initiatives

• Preferred: Advanced degree

• Preferred: Originality of thought and creative imagination with respect to digital media advocacy initiatives

• Preferred: Experience (professional and/or volunteer) working within the LGBT community

• Preferred: Experience producing new media platforms for advocacy, and developing digital media advocacy campaigns

• Capacity to succeed in a dynamic, complex and diverse environment, including strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines, and self-motivated

• Demonstrated success in writing, reporting or placing media coverage, including substantive experience interacting with media in a PR capacity (pitching stories, providing resources or giving print and on-camera media interviews)

• Effective public communications experience, including public speaking, community organizing and leading skill-building trainings

• Familiarity with and experience in strategic planning and implementation, and management of large projects

• Ability to work well with others and exhibit strong interpersonal skills

• Practical experience in common software applications

• Ability to travel up to 25% of time



Supervision

The Director of Digital Initiatives reports to the Senior Vice President.



Compensation

Salary commensurate with experience brought to position/organization. Benefits include: 403(b) retirement plan; escalating vacation beginning with three weeks+; Paid sick, personal days and holidays; and Organization paid health benefits for employees including medical, dental, vision, flex spending accounts, flexible work arrangements, employee assistance program and life and long-term disability insurance.
